On Tuesday 23rd April we travel down the coast and turn off at St. Asaph to face Denbigh Town in our final league match of the season, the match kicks off at 7.30pm.
Denbigh is a prominent market town and the former county town of the historic county of Denbighshire. The span of Denbigh’s history covers Edward I and the Glyndwr revolt, the War of the Roses, the English Civil War and the industrial age.
One of the more interesting historical facts about the town comes from the 16th century. Robert Dudley, Elizabeth 1’s favourite, envisaged constructing a cathedral in Denbigh so that the town could gain City status at the expense of nearby St. Asaph.
More practically, Denbigh is situated roughly 6 miles to the south of St. Asaph. Denbigh’s ground is called Central Park and its postcode is LL16 3EW.
Denbigh Town is another Cymru North club with a long history, The club was founded in 1880 and they won both the Welsh Amateur Cup and the North Wales Coast Amateur Cup in 1924. The Reds have played in what we now call Tiers 2 and 3 since the 1980s and as every 1876 fan will know Denbigh were promoted to the Cymru North as Ardal North West champions in 2023.
We faced The Reds in August and emerged victorious in a closely fought match. As you may remember 1876 won 2-1 thanks to goals from Sam Jones and Jamie Petrie.
As this match will be our final match of the season the club would like to thank everyone that has supported 1876 in our inaugural season in Tier 2.
We hope that we have given you all a few memories to cherish. Needless to say, it won’t be long until pre-season is upon us once more.
