Doubles from Clarke and McGonigle

On a cold evening at Treborth, Bangor 1876 chalked up an important league win at home to Llandudno Albion.

Early on, the visitors looked lively and sought to apply pressure on the home defence. Midfielder Ben Jarvis had an early effort from just outside the penalty area which was saved by Carl Jones, who was making his first start for 1876 since joining during the January transfer window. Minutes later, Bryan Roberts looked set to break into the box but was denied by a well-timed interception from Kian Owen.

However, it was Bangor 1876 who took the lead on the quarter hour mark. Joe Culshaw floated a free-kick towards the back post where Tom Clarke headed it back across goal and into the far corner. It was the defender’s second goal in as many matches.

After taking the lead, 1876 settled into their rhythm and came close to adding a second when Kian Owen swung in a cross from the left but Corrig McGonigle’s header went over the bar. The prolific attacker had better luck just over ten minutes before the break when he headed the ball over visiting goalkeeper Ashley Lavender after a neat chip through the middle from Liam Morris.

In first half injury time, Bangor 1876 added a third goal when Tom Clarke scored from close range after Lavender failed to claim a corner kick from the left that was taken by Joe Culshaw.

HALF-TIME: Bangor 1876 3-0 Llandudno Albion

In the opening minutes of the second period, some good work by half-time substitute Harry Galeotti on the left created another chance for McGonigle but his header went over the bar. Tom Clarke then came close to completing his hat-trick with a header following another corner from Culshaw but Lavender managed to push away the defender’s effort.

Corrig McGonigle twice came close to adding a fourth goal with shots from the edge of the box just after the midway point of the second half as Bangor looked to extend their lead. However, it was the visitors who got back into the game with just over ten minutes left when Daniel Evans scored from close range following a corner kick.

With two minutes of normal time left, Evans again had an effort on goal but his shot from the right side of the penalty area was well parried by Carl Jones. However, the hosts scored thanks to a downward header from Jamie Moorhouse following the resultant corner.

Although the two goals from Albion created a somewhat nervy end to the game for home fans, the result was put beyond doubt in injury time after another goal from a familiar source. After being fouled as he sought to break into the penalty area, Corrig McGonigle stepped up to curl a free-kick round the wall and low into the bottom corner. The final whistle was blown shortly afterwards as 1876 secured an important win.
