At 2pm on Saturday 11 November, we welcome Flint Town United to Nantporth for a match in the Third Round of the Welsh Cup. The history of football in Bangor has been punctuated by many memorable matches in a variety of cup competitions, not least in the Welsh Cup. Indeed, our manager Michael Johnston was part of a team that won the Welsh Cup three times in a row from 2008 to 2010.
Even within the relatively short history of Bangor 1876 as a fan-owned club, there have already been some highly memorable cup exploits. Many fans will doubtlessly remember our dramatic penalty shoot-out victory against tier 3 side Penycae during our debut season in tier 5.
Resilience and a will-to-win have characterised many generations of Bangor teams in the Welsh Cup, and in recent years our players have shown a real determination to prolong this tradition. We have received fantastic backing from fans both home and away in cup competitions just as we have in the league.
This Saturday, we face a big challenge as we welcome to Treborth a team that was competing in the JD Cymru last season. Flint Town United are currently third in the JD Cymru North, and only trail Holywell and Airbus on goal difference. Flint are one of only two teams who remain undefeated in the league. Indeed, it’s over four months since the lost a Nathaniel MG Cup match against Prestatyn on penalties in their only defeat so far this season.
Many players and coaches over the years have commented on how supporters have been like an additional player as Bangor teams have strived for success in cup competitions. It would be great to see a big turnout on Saturday as we take on formidable opponents in an iconic tournament that has been a major part of the history of football in Bangor.
Please remember that season tickets are not valid for Welsh Cup games, so all supporters will need to pay on the way into Saturday’s match. Payment on the turnstiles will be cash only but card payments will be accepted at the entrance to the clubhouse in the back of the main stand. Finally, please remember that our game against Flint Town United kicks off at the earlier than usual time of 2pm. Goals and drama have been a feature of many Welsh Cup games in Bangor over the years, so please don’t be late for what promises to be an exciting encounter.
