Goals in the gloom lift spirits on cloudy afternoon

A lively performance by Bangor 1876 at home to Gwalchmai brightened up a cloudy Treborth as another win was chalked up in a high-scoring match.

There were several chances early on and Luke Steele came close to opening the scoring inside the first five minutes but side-footed narrowly wide following a Joe Culshaw cross. The midfielder tried a shot from 20 yards not long afterwards but his effort cleared the crossbar.

Cameron Barry also had a chance inside the first ten minutes after he broke into the right side of the penalty area but his effort was saved well by visiting goalkeeper Konner Druce. A few minutes later, he had another chance following a flowing team move but couldn’t find the target.

However, the deadlock was broken in the eighteenth minute. Following a corner kick on the right, the ball fell to Les Davies on the edge of the area. After taking a touch to control the ball, he unleashed a powerful shot to put 1876 a goal up.

Several more chances arrived midway through the opening period. First, a stabbed effort by Luke Steel was saved before a minute later Les Davies turned and shot narrowly wide from the edge of the box.

Corey Jones came close to scoring for the fourth game in a row ten minutes before the interval but his diving header from a Dylan Williams cross was well saved by Druce in goal for Gwalchmai.

HALF-TIME: Bangor 1876 1-0 Gwalchmai

1876’s quick start to the first half was mirrored by the way they began the second period. They doubled their advantage within five minutes of the re-start after full back Joe Culshaw broke into the left side of the penalty area before cutting inside and firing in a powerful shot that caused the net to bulge.

Les Davies looked keen to add to his goal tally and only a save at full stretch by Konner Druce managed to keep out a powerful 20-yard effort. In the 56th minute, a third goal arrived after the ball was worked across the field to Luke Steele who side footed home from the edge of the penalty area.

Five minutes later, Luke Steele was tripped breaking into the box which gave Les Davies an opportunity from the penalty spot. He made no mistake, sending the goalkeeper the wrong way and making it 4-0.

Shortly afterwards, Les Davies turned provider as a neat pass created a chance for Harry Galeotti but his effort was saved. However, Dylan Williams managed to add a fifth goal in the 72nd minute after a through ball from substitute Ben Owen.

Williams looked set to score another with just over ten minutes left but visiting keeper Druce pulled off an instinctive save with his left foot as the midfielder tried to place an effort into the corner. However, Dylan Williams did grab his second goal of the afternoon with the last kick of the game as he finished well from close range after breaking into the left side of the penalty area.

FINAL SCORE: Bangor 1876 6-0 Gwalchmai

Many thanks to everyone who turned out at Treborth to support the team and best of luck to Gwalchmai for the rest of the season. Our next game is away to Penrhyndeudraeth at 2.30pm on Saturday 16 October. Please make the trip if you can to cheer on the team.

Finally, our manager Dylan Williams would like to thank our players, coaches, board members and fans for their support following the recent passing of his father. As a club, our thoughts are very much with Dylan and his family.
