13-2 win against Bontnewydd ends year in style

Following the Christmas break, Bangor 1876 welcomed Bontnewydd to Treborth for their last match of 2019 and signed off in style with a large win. The match was played in front of a crowd over 400 spectators, and preceded by an impeccably respected minute’s silence following the recent passing of Louisa Shooman.

The scoring began in the seventh minute as Matthew Lock converted a Dylan Summers-Jones cross from close range, a goal that was reminiscent of his later equalizer against Penycae in the Welsh Cup.

Only three minutes later, Dylan Summers-Jones doubled the lead, taking advantage of some confusion in the Bontnewydd defence to turn and lob the ball over the visiting goalkeeper from thirty yards. Halfway through the opening period, the young attacker made it 3-0 when he rounded the goalkeeper and finished calmly on his left foot following a swift counter attack after Bontnewydd had hit the post at the other end. Having previously opened his account for the evening with his right foot, Summers-Jones completed a ‘perfect hat-trick’ by heading in a Les Davies cross nine minutes before half-time.

Just before the interval, Les Davies put Bangor 1876 five goals in front after turning and scoring with a powerful shot from outside the penalty area. Seven minutes into the second period, Jamie Petrie made it 6-0 with a decisive finish at the back post after Dylan Summers-Jones crossed from the left wing. With the seventy minute mark approaching, Cameron Barry crowned an impressive performance in midfield by firing in the seventh goal of the evening after Benn Lundstram squared the ball.

With nineteen minutes left, Bontnewydd got on the scoresheet via a penalty from their captain Matthew Roberts. A quarter of an hour from the end of the match, Les Davies made the score 8-1 by heading in a cross from the right by 1876’s captain Michael Johnston. Four minutes later, a second Matthew Roberts penalty reduced the deficit to 8-2 before a flurry of goals in the last ten minutes.

Dylan Summers-Jones scored his fourth of the evening, via his right foot after breaking into the left side of the penalty area. With four minutes left, Les Davies completed his hat-trick after controlling a Shaun Lock free-kick on his chest and firing in from the edge of the six-yard box. A minute later, Luke Steele made it 11-2 after a shot by Dafydd Thomas was well saved by Ethan Carter. As the clock ticked down, Benn Lundstram added a twelfth goal for Bangor 1876 as he converted a cross from Dylan Summers-Jones. Summers-Jones then added his fifth of the evening in the final minute, side-footing the ball in at the back post to make the final score 13-2.

Next up for Bangor 1876 are two Gwynedd League matches in three days; an away trip to Glantraeth on Saturday 4 January (2pm kick-off) will be followed by a match at home to Waunfawr on Monday 6 January (7.45pm).
