On Saturday, Bangor 1876 welcomed Llanystumdwy to Treborth for the second time this season in their last match before Christmas. The home win ensures that 1876 will be at the top of the tree as the festive season approaches.
The opening goal arrived in the twenty-sixth minute after some slick passing led to Dylan Summers-Jones breaking into the left side of the penalty area before squaring the ball for Benn Lundstram to sidefoot home.
Eight minutes late, 1876 doubled their advantage from an unlikely source as captain Michael Johnston headed in a free-kick swung into the box from the right wing. This doubles his goal tally for the season just over a month after opening his account against the same opponents in a match in the Bob Owen Memorial Shield.
In the final move of the opening period, Shaun Lock made in 3-0 to 1876 after a powerful left-footed shot from outside the box by Shaun Lock deceived the visiting goalkeeper. Shortly after the interval, a fourth goal arrived as Dylan Summers-Jones broke into the penalty area and calmly slotted the ball home after a neat pass from Jamie Petrie.
Petrie scored 1876’s fifth goal in the seventy-third minute after he was picked out well by Cameron Barry as he ran into the box and netted with a stabbed shot that the Llanystumdwy goalkeeper couldn’t keep out. In the final minute, Ben Owen scored a sixth goal with a shot from the edge of the penalty area that skimmed the head of a Llanystumdwy defender on its way in.
On a day when 1876 achieved an impressive result on the field, the club again showed its community spirit off the field as its food bank collection saw players, officials, fans and sponsors contribute a vast array of items. Further food bank collections will take place at all remaining home games this season.
The final match of 2019 for Bangor 1876 will be at home to Bontnewydd at 7.45pm on Monday 30 December. This will be followed by an away trip to face Glantraeth at 2pm on Saturday 4 January before a local derby at home to Menai Bridge Tigers on Monday 6 January (7.30pm kick-off).
