Saturday 13 January sees us welcome Chirk AAA to Nantporth for a JD Cymru North league match. It will be our first ever match against the side from the Wrexham area. Please note that the match kicks off at 2pm. We will be having another foodbank collection at this Saturday's game and would be most grateful for donations which will be of benefit to local families.
One thing that we share with this weekend’s opponents concerns the year that features in our club name. 1876 is part of our club name as it is in that year that the first ever football team in Bangor was founded. 1876 was also the year in which Chirk AAA were founded and they are thus one of the oldest Welsh football clubs, and were among the founder members of the Football Association of Wales.
The legendary Billy Meredith played for Chirk during two spells in the 1890s before his career took him to both Manchester City and Manchester United. The 1880s and 1890s were a particularly successful era for Chirk as they won the Welsh Cup five times in seven years. Indeed, they have achieved notable successes in a variety of cup competitions over the years. This includes winning the Welsh Amateur Cup three times in the late 1950s and early 1960s and, more recently, winning the FAW Trophy in the 2016-17 season.
Last weekend, Chirk lost 2-0 at home to Holywell Town. Over Christmas and New Year, they played two matches against Guilsfield. They lost 4-0 away to Guilsfield on Boxing Day but drew 2-2 at home to their opponents from Mid Wales on New Year’s Day thanks to two penalties from Max McLaughlin.
At this Saturday’s game, we will be able to sell bottles of the recently launched Bangor 1876 beers. Bottles will be sold in packs of three costing £13 on a 'first come, first served' basis. They cannot be consumed at the ground or taken into the stand. They can be ordered at the ground pre-match and then collected at the end of the game.
After this weekend’s match against Chirk, our next game will be away to Holywell on Saturday 20 January (2pm kick-off). We are planning to run a supporters’ to this game and it will leave Bangor Railway station at 11.00am. Cost will be £15.00. Contact Dave Roberts (07517 482182) for booking and payment details.
