Second half goals down Buckley

On a cold evening at Nantporth it was Bangor who threatened first in the third minute after Sam Jones broke down the right and cut the ball back towards Jamie Petrie. However, the 1876 captain's left-footed shot went just over the bar.

In the twelfth minute Bangor seemed to have broken the deadlock when Corrig McGonigle headed in a Sam Jones corner. With the Bangor players set to celebrate, the referee consulted with one of his assistants and then ruled out the effort due to an offside.

Almost instantly Buckley won a penalty after breaking forward and drawing a foul inside the box. Danny Burgess's effort from twelve yards had plenty of power but struck the crossbar and rebounded to safety.

With twenty minutes gone, McGonigle had another chance after a neat through ball from Joe Sullivan. The attacker managed to lob the ball over visiting goalkeeper Ryan Goldston from just outside the box but his effort dropped narrowly wide of the far post.

The visitors then had a trio of chances within a five minute period. Liam Driscoll shot narrowly wide when he got to a clearance from Huw Shaw and lifted the ball over the Bangor goalkeeper. Shaw then did well to save from Adam Smith and the acrobatically tip a header from Driscoll over the bar.

Bangor threatened again shortly afterwards but Goldston did well to turn away a powerful shot on the run by Jamie Petrie following a quick break. The action continued to flow from one end to the other. Adam Boydell of Buckley was next to threaten when he headed the ball goalwards following a corner but Joe Sullivan nodded his effort off the line.

Sam Jones had the next chance for Bangor shortly afterwards but fired wide after he was played in by Craig Whelan. At the other end, Huw Shaw pulled off another good save to keep out a shot from Burgess. Despite all the opportunities in the opening period, the score remained goalless at the break.

In the early stages of the second half, Bangor had plenty of possession inside the Buckley half. After some neat passing, Joe Sullivan played an inviting ball across goal but it just elueded Sam Jones at the back post.

After a rather subdued period during the second half which saw both sides cancel each other out, Bangor took the lead with just under twenty minutes left. Liam Morris played in a cross from the right just after taking the place of Jamie Petrie. Bangor's number ten Corrig McGonigle slid in at the back post to score his tenth league goal of the season.

Within two minutes, Bangor doubled their advantage as McGonigle scored again with a neat finish from just inside the box that beat Goldston.

With four minutes left, substitute Gethin Thomas received the ball on the right and cut the ball back to fellow replacement Liam Morris. Morris found the net with a powerful shot from the edge of the area.

In the closing minutes a red card was shown to Buckley Town’s Josh Dunroe. Dunroe had been substituted twenty minutes earlier but was disciplined after shouting at an assistant referee.

As the clock ticked down, Huw Shaw made another good save as he blocked a shot from Buckley substitute Josh Allen. It was the last opportunity of the match as Bangor clinched a much sought after victory.

We have a free weekend coming up on 25-26 November, but will return to action on Saturday 2 December when we travel to face Buckley Town in a league match.
