On Saturday 23 September, we will make our first ever away trip to Caersws to take on the Mid Wales team in a league match that kicks off at 2.30pm.
Our opponents were originally founded as Caersws amateurs in 1887 and became Caersws FC in 1974. They were one of the founder members of the League of Wales in 1992, and won the League Cup in 2001, 2002, and 2007.
Like ourselves, Caersws gained promotion from tier 3 in the 2022-23 season. After having lost the promotion play-off to Porthmadog at the end of the 2021-22 season, they went one better in 2022-23 by securing automatic promotion to tier 2 by winning the Ardal North East League.
At the time of writing, Caersws are a place above us in the league table having taken a point more from their opening six games. They have won three, drawn one, and lost two. They began this month with a 2-1 league cup defeat away to Llanidloes which was followed by a 3-2 loss away to Flint Town United in the league. Within the last ten days, they won 2-0 away to Berriew in the Montgomeryshire Challenge Cup before losing 3-1 away to Brickfield Rangers in the Welsh Cup.
One of the familiar faces in the Caersws side to followers of domestic football in Wales is attacker Neil Mitchell. The former Newtown player is - along with Rhy Hesden - their joint top scorer in the league so far this season. Mitchell has found the net five times this season, and four of those came in a 5-1 win against Ruthin Town at the end of August.
Caersws play at Recreation Park and the postcode for the ground is SY17 5SA. Please make the trip to cheer on 1876 if you can.
