Dramatic late win at sunny Nantporth

In a much anticipated game, the fans didn't have long to wait to see some goalmouth action. A long pass forward from Les Davies in central defence found Jamie Petrie running towards the right side of the Rhyl area. After steadying himself, he fired in a low shot across goal that went in off the post to give Bangor the lead after only 27 seconds.

In the seventh minute, Bangor came close to doubling their lead when Liam Morris showed his pace to break into the left side of the Rhyl box. His powerful low shot across goal struck both posts and stayed out. Visiting goalkeeper Joshua Wilmot then showed good reactions to save Corrig McGonigle's follow-up effort.

At the other end, Rhyl sought to find a way back into the game and Kieran Ellis saw his half-volley from the edge of the area saved by Huw Shaw.

As the twenty minute mark approached, a neat passing move created a chance for Dylan Williams but his cut back was blocked by Wilmot in the Rhyl goal and then cleared.

Ten minutes before the break Rhyl had a chance to level the score after Joe Culshaw was adjudged to have fouled James Stead. Jack Higgins stepped up to send Huw Shaw the wrong way from the penalty spot to level the score.

In the final minute of the half, Kieran Ellis had a chance after he turned after receiving the ball near the penalty spot but he was denied by a well timed block by Kian Owen.

HALF-TIME: Bangor 1876 1-1 Rhyl 1879

The second half didn't get off to quite as frantic a start as the opening period. Buoyed by their equaliser, the visitors pressed as they sought to impose themselves on the game.

As the half unfolded, the two sides fought hard to create opportunities but chances were at a premium and neither game had many saves to make as the game approached the last twenty minutes.

However a Sion Edwards cross from the left found Corrig McGonigle at the back post and his header across goal forced the Rhyl defence to clear from just in front of the goal line.

Inside the last quarter hour, both sides pressed. Corrig McGonigle turned nearly with just over ten minutes left but couldn't direct his shot on target.

During the last five minutes, Bangor pressed and Les Davies had a chance following a corner from Sion Edwards but couldn't direct his header on target.

However, they had better luck shortly afterwards. Liam Morris cut in from the right wing and sent in a curling shot that Corrig McGonigle deflected past Wilmot in the Rhyl goal and into the net.

Rhyl went on search of a late equaliser but to no avail as the Bangor defence held out to secure an important victory.
