On Saturday 11 February at 2pm, we return to action with an away trip to face Llay Welfare. Although we have faced Llay at Treborth twice already this season, this weekend we will be making our first visit to play them at The Ring.
Our opponents this weekend are one of several in our league from the Wrexham area. After their foundation in 1931, they competed in the Wrexham and District League. Prior to the reorganisation of the league structure in 2020, they played in the Wrexham area section of the Welsh National League. Their most famous former player is Chris Armstrong, who had a spell at Llay before moving to Wrexham and later playing for both Crystal Palace and Tottenham Hotspur in the English Premier League.
Our two games against Llay at Treborth have produced plenty of goals and excitement. Back in August, we were 2-0 down at half-time in a league match, but fought back to draw 2-2 thanks to two goals from four minutes from Corrig McGonigle. Rhys Lloyd and Jay Philipps had given the visitors the lead at the break.
In an FAW Trophy game at home to Llay in November, we ran out 4-1 winners in a game where we were 3-0 up inside the first twenty minutes. Les Davies scored a hat-trick and Sion Edwards also found the net in a match where Rhys Lloyd scored for the visitors. The scoreline was perhaps somewhat harsh on a Llay side that struck the frame of the goal on several occasions and contributed to a highly entertaining encounter.
The address of Llay’s ground is as follows: The Ring, Llay Miners Welfare, Llay, Wrexham, LL12 0TH. The club’s tea shed will be open before and during the game, and will be serving a range of hot and cold food, and drinks.
