Goal in each half secures victory

Bangor 1876 returned to the top of the league with a hard-fought win against a resolute Llanrwst team on a wet evening at Treborth. In a lively start to the game, Gethin Thomas was the first player to have an effort on goal. However, his powerful shot from just outside the box was well saved by Llanrwst goalkeeper Ryan Williams.

In the early stages, Liam Morris saw plenty of the ball on the left wing for Bangor. Just before the ten minute mark, he cut the ball back to Jamie Petrie who saw his shot saved by Williams. Minutes later, it was the visitors who had a glorious chance to take the lead. A ball over the top found Samuel Jones in space beyond the last defender. However, Huw Shaw pulled off an excellent save to prevent Jones from opening the scoring.

Midway through the opening period, Bangor had another chance when Sion Edwards broke down the left and played the ball into the middle. The cross reached Jamie Petrie but his shot on the turn went over the bar.

Moments later it was Liam Morris who shot at goal after making space on the left side of the penalty area, but his low effort went just wide of the far post.

Just after the half hour mark, Bangor again came close to opening the scoring. Ben Owen swung the ball into the box from the right and it was headed down by Liam Morris into the path of Jamie Petrie. However, Petrie was unable to find the target as he slid in and it remained goalless.
Moments later, Morris again created a chance for Petrie with a cross into the box from the left. However, Petrie's downward header failed to trouble the visiting goalkeeper.

Sion Edwards was the next to threaten but his shot from the left side of the area was well saved by Williams and then headed away for a corner. Inside the last ten minutes of the half, a shot from Liam Morris was deflected just wide of the target as Bangor continued to press.

Just as it looked like the game would remain goalless at the break, Bangor took the lead after a free kick was played into the box from near halfway. After Corrig McGonigle shielded the ball, it broke to the onrushing Gethin Thomas who sidefooted the ball into the net from the edge of the six yard box.

HALF-TIME: Bangor 1876 1-0 Llanrwst United

In the opening minutes of the second period, the first chance fell to Bangor. Corrig McGonigle intercepted the ball following a Llanrwst throw-in. His pass across goal reached Jamie Petrie at the back post but he couldn't keep his sliding effort on target.

Just before the hour mark, Bangor came close to extending their lead following a Sion Edwards corner. During a frantic scramble inside the visitors' box, the ball struck the bar twice. On the first occasion it was headed against the woodwork before a hooked effort from Corey Jones again struck the frame of the goal. A few minutes later, Sion Edwards came close to finding the net with an audacious chip from 25 yards that drifted just over the bar.

As the game entered the final quarter hour, Bangor's single goal advantage at times looked perilous. However, they doubled their advantage with just over twelve minutes left and it was a cracker. There looked to be no immediate danger when Corrig McGonigle received the ball with his back to goal a few yards in from the right touchline just over twenty yards out. He then turned and curled the ball over Williams and into the top corner.

Llanrwst continued to press as the clock ticked down and Huw Shaw did well to turn a powerful shot from Dafi Evans around the post. There were no further goals as Bangor 1876 secured a victory that took them back to the top of the league.
