1876 secure important win at Eithin Duon

On a sunny afternoon in Llanrug, Bangor 1876 had to work hard in order to secure an important victory.

Early on, there were several chances. In the third minute, Corrig McGonigle broke into the left side of the penalty area and played a cross into a threatening area but the ball drifted just wide of the far post.

A minute later, Jamie Petrie broke into the right side of the box but his lobbed effort went just over the crossbar. Midway through the opening period, fellow attacker Alwyn Roberts came close to breaking the deadlock but headed narrowly over the crossbar.

Shortly after the half hour mark, Corrig McGonigle volleyed over as the game remained goalless as half-time approached. Although Bangor 1876 dominated possession and created more opportunities in the opening period, hosts Llanrug also threatened on occasion. Striker Osian WIlliams tried an overhead kick from about ten yards out but the ball went a couple of yards wide.

Six minutes before the interval a Joe Culshaw corner from the left side was headed goalwards by Jamie Petrie, but the ball was cleared off the line and the sides went in level at the break.

HALF-TIME: Llanrug 0-2 Bangor 1876

In the opening minute of the second half, Les Davies came close to breaking the deadlock when he sent in a powerful low volley from 20 yards that went just wide. However he found the target moments later when the ball dropped to him in the left side of the penalty area after a long throw from Shaun Lock. His powerful low shot back across goal found the net to open the scoring.

There were fewer chances in the second period as a resolute Llanrug side sought to get back into the game and threatened on occasion from some set pieces near the Bangor box. There was also a delay of several minutes when home captain Sion Philipps sustained an injury and had to be helped from the field. We wish him a swift recovery.

Inside the last ten minutes, Les Davies came close to adding a second goal when he hooked the ball over home goalkeeper Gerallt Bracegirdle but the ball was cleared off the line in the ensuing goalmouth scramble.

With three minutes of the game left, Les Davies found himself near the right hand touchline about thirty yards from the hosts’ goal. He moved infield and played what initially looked like a curling left footed cross into the box. The ball seemed to get caught in the wind and went over the head of the home goalkeeper and dropped in at the back post to double 1876’s lead. There were no further chances of note as Bangor 1876 earned an important win.

FINAL SCORE: Llanrug 0-2 Bangor 1876

We would like to thank today’s hosts Llanrug for the warm welcome and wish them all the best for the remainder of the season. Our next game will be under the lights at Treborth when we take on Gaerwen on 25 March. Kick-off is at 7.30pm.
