Bangor made a lively start to the game and came close to opening the scoring inside the first ten minutes. Corrig McGonigle took a quick free-kick that found Mason Blackwell-Jones, but the midfielder’s shot across the face of goal went narrowly wide.
At the other end, the visitors threatened on a quick counter attack but Huw Shaw saved a powerful shot from an FC United attacker.
Shortly before the twenty minute mark, Corrig McGonigle came close to finding the net with a glancing header when Telor Williams crossed the ball in from the left. However, his effort went just wide of the post and wouldn't have counter as the assistant referee flagged for offside.
With almost half an hour on the clock, Craig Whelan had a chance after Telor Williams again swung the ball in from the left. Whelan tried a first time shot but missed the target.
Moments later, Bangor came close to opening the scoring. Mason Blackwell-Jones’ shot from the edge of the box was saved well by the visiting goalkeeper. Corrig McGonigle the shot towards goal on the rebound, but an FC United defender cleared the ball off the line.
With half-time approaching, Bangor continued to press. Telor Williams stabbed the ball towards goal from 20 yards out but his shot went narrowly over the crossbar.
In 41 minutes, Bangor took the lead. Cai Parry-Roberts played in a low cross from the right and Corrig McGonigle scored from close range.
FC United were also playing some neat football and came close to scoring either side of the Bangor opener via efforts from their lively attacker Bob Jammeh.
HALF-TIME: BANGOR 1876 1-0 FC UNITED OF MANCHESTER
After a series of Bangor substitutions at half-time it was FC United who made the better start to the second period. They drew level after 53 minutes when Bob Jammeh broke into the left side of the box and scored with a well-placed low shot.
Bangor quickly broke to the other end and almost regained the lead from an unlikely source. On his return from injury, Ben Owen jinked past an opponent before curling a shot over the box from 25 yards out.
But it wasn't long before Bangor were back in front. A corner kick from the right after 56 minutes by Mason Blackwell-Jones reached Corey Jones near the penalty spot and the defender scored with a well-placed volley.
Two minutes later, Bangor doubled their advantage. Corrig McGonigle dispossessed a visiting defender on the edge of the box but saw his shot turned onto the post by the FC United goalkeeper. However, a member of the Trialist family - who had representatives on both sides - tucked away the rebound.
Midway through the second half Corrig McGonigle scored his second and Bangor's fourth. Dan Cox broke forward and played a neat pass to the attacker who found the net with a powerful shot into the top right corner.
The visitors almost reduced the deficit with twenty minutes to go when one of their substitutes (18) showed some neat footwork before curling a shot just wide of the target from twenty yards.
With fifteen minutes left, FC United had another chance when their left-back broke through but his shot was well saved by Huw Shaw.
After 83 minutes, FC United managed to score their second. After Bangor were dispossessed, Lewis Gilboy scored from just outside the box.
