Extra-time goals clinch dramatic win

In sun-drenched Prestatyn, Bangor 1876 won the tier three play-off against Cefn Albion in a match full of drama from start to finish.

Bangor sought to go on the attack form the odd and won a corner kick inside the opening minute. Tom Clarke headed the ball goalwards from Sion Edwards' inswinger but it was headed off the line by a Cefn defender. Joe Culshaw sent a follow-up shot wide from just outside the area.

Cefn Albion got the ball forward following a free-kick on halfway. Kien Morris fired in a shot from outside the box that was turned away for a corner by Carl Jones.

Just after midway point of the first half, Bangor came close to opening the scoring. A long ball down the middle was headed on by Corrig McGonigle and Jamie Petrie narrowly missed the target with an attempted lob from just outside the box.

At the other end, Cefn Albion left back Jordan Williams had a chance after breaking into the left side of the penalty area. However, his powerful low effort was repelled by Carl Jones.

Ten minutes before the break, Bangor won a corner on the right and Sion Edwards swung the ball across the face of goal but it eluded the Bangor attackers and drifted narrowly wide of the far post.

Not longer afterwards, Jamie Petrie showed some pace to break down the left and cross the ball into the box. Corrig McGonigle met it on the run but his volley drifted narrowly over the bar.

With three minutes left before the interval, Albion were reduced to ten men. Liam Morris sought to cut inside from the right wing but was floored by a forceful challenge from Dion Gibbins. The referee instantly showed the red card.

HALF-TIME: BANGOR 1876 0-0 CEFN ALBION

Immediately after the re-start, Bangor went on the attack and a powerful shot from Jamie Petrie was well saved by Josh Roberts. However it wasn't long before the deadlock was broken.

Jamie Petrie showed his pace once again as he broke into the right side of the penalty area five minutes into the second half. Rather than shooting from a tight angle, he opted to cut the ball back and it was slammed in by Corrig McGonigle.

Five minutes later, Bangor doubled their lead. Sion Edwards took a corner on the left and a powerful downward header from Tom Clarke found the net.

Cefn sought a route back into the game and Ben Owen had to remain alert to block a low shot from Albion left back Jordan Williams.

Just after a water break, Bangor again threatened. Les Davies played the ball across the face of goal and it was flicked narrowly wide by Liam Morris.

With twenty minutes left, Cefn Albion had a chance to get back into the game after winning possession on the left. The ball was swung into the box but Kien Morris stabbed the ball wide from near the penalty spot.

With five minutes left, Cefn got themselves back into the game when Ryan Kershaw scored with a looping long range effort.

Inside the final minute, there was further late drama as Cefn Albion won a penalty following
a mis-timed challenge in the box. Ryan Kehoe stepped up to take the kick and equalised with a shot down the middle. Both sides.pressed for a winner but the score remained level and extra time ensued.

FULL-TIME: BANGOR 1876 2-2 CEFN ALBION

Inside the first half of extra time, a neat reverse pass from Gethin Thomas found Corrig McGonigle on the right side of the penalty area but his low shot from a tight angle was blocked by the legs of Albion goalkeeper Josh Roberts.

As half-time in extra time approached, Cefn Albion had a chance when the ball was worked to Alex Williams on the right side of the box but he screwed his shot wide of the near post.

Just after the start of the second period of extra-time, Les Davies created a chance for himself when he shielded the ball and turned on the edge of the box but his shot went just wide.

Immediately afterwards, Cefn Albion came close to scoring when a deflected cross from Luke Griffin hit the crossbar and went out for a corner.

With seven minutes of extra time to go, Bangor went back in front. Liam Morris cut in from the right and fired in a powerful low shot that found the net from 20 yards.

In the final minute of extra-time, Bangor won a penalty when Corrig McGonigle was pushed over in the box. The foul led to a second sending off for Cefn Albion as Nicholas Jones was dismissed. McGonigle stepped up to calm convert the spot kick.
