Players and fans recall an amazing game

When we ask fans and players about their most memorable games so far this season, there are some matches that keep cropping up. One is our first ever game away to FC United last July, and another is our dramatic Welsh Cup win against Penycae in a penalty shoot-out. As it's now exactly six months since our thrilling cup win, we thought it'd be a good time to look back on a highly memorable occasion.

The match took place on a wet afternoon in October, the weekend after a victory against Llanelwy in the NWCFA Junior Cup. After conceding an early goal, Jamie Petrie equalised from the penalty spot almost instantly. However, we conceded a second half goal that seemed as if it would end our first ever Welsh Cup run. That was until an injury time corner was scrambled in by Matt Lock to force extra-time.

Despite seemingly having the impetus after a late, late equaliser, the visitors took the lead for the third time. However, we equalised for a third time from a second Jamie Petrie penalty. It finished 3-3 at the end of extra-time.

The penalty shoot-out was a topsy-turvy affair that saw Michael Johnston and Shaun Lock fail to convert our first two spot-kicks. But Leon Jones kept us in contention with a fine save before Les Davies and Dylan Williams converted. A miss from Penycae meant that it was all-square at 2-2 after four penalties apiece. Jamie Petrie then scored from the spot for a third time before Penycae's next taker struck the crossbar with a powerful shot that came close to crossing the line but stayed out. Cue enthusiastic celebrations from players, coaches, and fans…

Players' memories

Jamie Petrie: "Matty Lock’s last second equaliser ... made it into an amazing day"

Leon Jones: "I remember the last minute goal Matty Lock scored as I was up for the corner. It’s the only time I've got involved in celebrations all season. But my highlight of that game was saving a penalty in the shoot out, and when we eventually won it, seeing everyone buzzing, fans running on the pitch, everyone falling all over each other. Definitely not something I’ll forget any time soon!"

Fans' memories

Huw Pritchard: "The atmosphere on the slate bonk that day was amazing. The last minute goal created absolute scenes. Was a great game!"

Gwydion Edwards: "Coming back three times and winning on penalties! The atmosphere that day was incredible!"

Les Pegler: "to be behind all game, including through the penalties, and to then snatch it at the death, with obviously the last kick was breath-taking."

John Dexter-Jones: "The cup tie against Penycae showed a glimpse of where this club can go and how it already embodies the spirit of Bangor fans."
