Llanberis beaten at Treborth

Bangor 1876 are through to the second qualifying round of the Welsh Cup after a high-scoring victory against Llanberis in a match that featured hat-tricks from two players.

The scoring began in the eighth minute after Joe Culshaw played the ball forward to Liam Morris. The recent signing from Holyhead Hotspur outmuscled an opposition defender on the edge of the box before finding the net with a powerful finish on his left foot.

Ten minutes later, Culshaw provided another assist when his inswinging corner from the left was met by a powerful downward header from Les Davies that found the net. Within a minute, Davies himself turned provider after his through ball enabled Liam Morris to round Llanberis goalkeeper Dylan Roberts and score with a calm finish.

In the twenty-fifth minute, Liam Morris completed his hat-trick and added a fourth goal for 1876 after a corner from Joe Culshaw on the right broke to him on the edge of the six-yard area. The forward reacted swiftly to increase the lead.

Although Llanberis had a lot of defending to do in the first half, they also broke forward on several occasions. Their best chance fell to Adam Jones after he broke into the 1876 box but his effort was saved well by the feet of home goalkeeper Cian Thomas.

With the half-time interval drawing close, a fifth goal arrived from a familiar source. Last season’s top scorer Corrig McGonigle netted his first of this season after a neat turn and shot from the edge of the penalty area.

HALF-TIME: Bangor 1876 5-0 Llanberis

Seven minutes into the second period, Corrig McGonigle added his second goal of the evening with a neat shot from the edge of the box after yet another assist from Joe Culshaw. Within a minute, Llanberis had a chance to reduce the deficit but Sean McGrath side-footed the ball wide of the post from the centre of the penalty area when well-placed.

Shortly before the hour mark, Corrig McGonigle became the second 1876 player of the evening to complete a hat-trick after scoring with a downward header following a whipped cross from the left by Kian Owen.

Inside the final twenty minutes, substitute Sion Edwards scored 1876’s eighth goal with a free-kick from just outside the penalty area. Fellow substitute Harry Galeotti then set Corrig McGonigle for his fourth and 1876’s ninth ten minutes later when he cut the ball back after breaking into the box.

As the possibility of 1876 reaching double figures loomed large it was in fact the visitors who created several chances inside the final ten minutes. They were rewarded with three minutes left when Kurt Hellfeld headed in following a corner. Inside injury time, they added a second when substitute Matthew Edwards scored from close range.

FULL-TIME: Bangor 1876 9-2 Llanberis
