Fan and former player looks back on amazing season

It's a Fan Focus Friday with a difference this week as we've interviewed a fan who also played for our team several times at the start of our first ever season. Here are Dion Rhys Williams' thoughts on the last twelve months.

You played several games for Bangor 1876 at the start of the season before joining Blaenau Ffestiniog. What has it been like returning to Treborth as a fan?
Yeah, every time I’ve been home and not had a game for Blaenau I've tried my best to come down and watch 1876! It’s brilliant to see how well the club has done in such a short space of time. It's always nice to see two of my best mates in Shaun Lock and Harry Jones playing for the club too, and have both had great seasons.

We heard that you also returned to Treborth during the season as part of the Liverpool John Moores University team. What's it like to have been part of both the home team and the away team at the same venue?
Yeah to be honest it was a very weird feeling! I spent most of the journey down translating Welsh road signs for my team mates so it was nice to get to the ground! Once there, it was nice to play in familiar surroundings with a few friends and family watching. The result didn’t go our way but was a nice venue at which to finish my time playing for LJMU.

What is the best memory you have from you time at Bangor 1876 as a player?
For me and like many of the lads still at the club it has to be the clubs first ever game at FC United of Manchester. The whole day was just quality! To play in front of so many fans was a great experience and to represent my home city was even better! When Benn scored that goal it honestly felt like we’d scored the winner!! I ran straight to my mates and my dad in the crowd! Was an experience I’ll never forget.

What has been your highlight of the season when it's come to the Bangor 1876 games you've attended as a fan?
Obviously I haven’t been able to go too to many due to playing myself but I watched 1876 at home vs Bontnewydd and it ended 13-2! It was a top class performance from the boys and it's always good to beat a local rival! I also went to the Llanrwst away game which wasn’t the best of results for the boys, but they battled hard and it was a fantastic day with all the boys! My little sister Daisy also plays for the Girls Under 10 team and it was also a big highlight for me seeing her pull on the Bangor 1876 kit for the first time!

How have you been coping with the lack of football during lockdown?
Football’s a massive part of my life so for it to just disappear like it did was awful! Not only for Blaenau but for the Uni team as well! We never got to have our annual varsity match vs Uni of Liverpool who are our biggest rivals! Its a great day out and would have been brilliant but I understand completely why football had to come to a halt!

I’ve personally tried to keep myself fit with running and cycling! I took part in the Lily Foundation marathon in a week challenge organised by Paul Templer and also at the same time was taking part in Blaenau’s 1000 mile in 3 weeks challenge. The aim was to raise as much money as we could to fund ground improvements for next season and the lads have put a huge shift in for the ground to look quality ready for the FAW inspection.

What are your hopes for the new season?
I’ve agreed to sign for Blaenau again and I’m just buzzing for it to all start to be honest! Hopefully we are in Tier 3 again and can improve on last season's first year in the league! It would be nice to see 1876 in the same league and would be brilliant to play at Treborth as an away player again!! I’ve also spoken to Iwan and I’m looking to do my coaching badges and hopefully be involved within the Junior set up with Bangor 1876 in some way!

I would like to congratulate Bangor 1876 on winning the league and I wish everyone involved the best of luck next season whenever that may be!
