1876 denied by the crossbar three times in second half

Despite a dominant performance away to Penrhyndeudraeth, Bangor 1876 had to settle for a draw in a match at Maes y Parc. Given the number of opportunities, it will have come as a surprise to many that the game finished goalless.

Jamie Petrie was the first to threaten, breaking into the left side of the hosts’ penalty area inside the first five minutes but shooting over. Chris Jones also had a chance but his effort was saved by home goalkeeper Robert Watson before Tom Clarke headed narrowly wide following a corner from Joe Culshaw.

Midway through the opening period, the hosts had some opportunities of their own following free-kicks. First of all, Liam Watson headed over before Steven Jones side-footed wide.

A feature of the match was a series of long throw-ins from the returning Shaun Lock, and these resulted in a series of close shaves. Shortly before the half hour mark, one trademark throw almost resulted in a goal for Harry Galeotti but his effort was saved.

A series of corners led to more opportunities for 1876 a Les Davies header being cleared off the line before another flag-kick resulted in a Chris Jones shot being saved, and then Les Davies heading just over a minute later.

Ben Heald had to look lively seven minutes before half-time, saving with his feet after Steven Jones broke into the box for the hosts.

A swift counter attack four minutes before the break saw Harry Galeotti break down the right and cross into the box, but Chris Jones’s effort was saved. As the interval drew ever closer, a Les Davies cross from the right resulted in another chance for Harry Galeotti but his effort went just wide.

HALF-TIME: Penrhyndeudraeth 0-0 Bangor 1876

1876 started the second half in a determined mood and an early corner from Joe Culshaw resulted in a header from Tom Clarke landing on the top of the net. Shortly before the hour mark, a goal almost arrived via a right wing cross from Jamie Petrie that struck the bar before being cleared for a corner.

With the midway point of the second period approaching, Penrhyndeudraeth created a chance of their own when they broke forward down the right but Adam Griffiths’s cross was tipped away well by Ben Heald.

Not long afterwards, Shaun Lock strode forward and unleashed a low shot from 35 yards that home goalkeeper Watson managed to parry wide for corner. A flag-kick with 15 minutes left on the clock almost resulted in the opener for 1876 but Joe Culshaw’s corner become the second effort to strike the crossbar.

Inside the final ten minutes, long throw-ins from Shaun Lock continued to create problems with one effort creating a chance for Chris Jones at the back post that he couldn’t quite keep down. Moments later, Jamie Petrie had another chance as he broke into the left side of the box but he shot wide. Two minutes later, Petrie had another opportunity from the other side of the penalty area but side-footed his attempt narrowly wide.

In the final minute of normal time, Les Davies brough the ball down well 20 yards out before firing in a powerful shot that crashed against the crossbar. In the first minute of injury time, Jamie Petrie had a further chance as he broke into the right side of the box but his effort was saved.

Penrhyndeudraeth had a chance in injury time themselves but Steven Jones’s rising effort cleared the crossbar. Bangor 1876 still had time to get the ball into their opponents’ box on a couple of further occasions but the score remained goalless.
