Second half goals make the difference

Bangor 1876 achieved another league win with a 4-1 success away to Mynydd Llandygai to make it two wins in four days following the home victory against Menai Bridge. Once again, late goals helped to make the difference.

In the fifth minute, Jamie Petrie had the first chance of the game for Bangor after breaking in the right side of the penalty area but his effort was saved by home goalkeeper Dafydd Morris. Chris Jones had a chance to open the scoring in the 18th minute but headed over following a free-kick.

Within a minute, however, the home side took the lead against the run of play. A long clearance by Mynydd keeper Morris was allowed to bounce and this enabled Osian Jones to head the ball over 1876 goalkeeper Ben Heald.

On the half hour mark, Bangor came close to an equaliser. A free-kick from Joe Culshaw was met by the head of Corey Jones at the back post but the home defence managed to clear the danger. In first half injury time Aaron Heald also came close but his left-footed shot from just outside the penalty area went narrowly wide.

HALF-TIME: Mynydd Llandygai 1-0 Bangor 1876

Whatever was said in the Bangor dressing room at half-time seemed to make a difference as the side began the second period with renewed determination and forced an early corner from the left side. Corey Jones headed the inswinging set-piece against the crossbar and his follow-up header was palmed against the bar by home keeper Dafydd Morris. Tom Clarke’s ensuing header was also palmed away on the line but by home defender Tomos Williams. Williams was shown sent off for preventing a certain goal and a penalty kick was awarded. It was converted decisely by Chris Jones, who sent his shot into the top left-hand corner.

Minutes later a determined run and shot from Les Davies resulted in another corner, and ultimately a second goal for 1876. Although the flag kick was cleared, and reached Cameron Barry on the edge of the box and his shot beat the home goalkeeper and ended up in the net.

Shortly afterwards, Tom Clarke had a chance to extend the advantage but headed over following a Les Davies cross from the left. On the hour mark, a Jamie Petrie cross from the right reached Chris Jones at the back post but his shot back across goal went narrowly wide.

With just over 20 minutes to go, Aaron Heald crossed from the right but Luke Steele’s header was well saved by Morris in goal for Mynydd. Despite their numerical disadvantage, the hosts stayed in the game for much of the second half.

Mynydd were somewhat hampered by injuries with scorer Osian Jones going off injured at half-time and his strike partner Alwyn Roberts having to leave the field wrapped in bandages after a head injury during the second period. Substitute attacker Cai Holdwsorth also had to leave the action due to injury not long after joining the action.

The injury to Alwyn Roberts resulted in a lengthy stoppage and a significant amount of injury time being added on. In the fourth minute of injury time a left-wing cross from substitute Harry Galeotti was met well at the back post by Corey Jones to ease some of the tension. His powerful header made the score 3-1 and was the midfielder’s third goal in as many games.

With the last action of the match, Chris Jones scored his second of the match after deftly lifting the ball over the advancing Morris. The final whistle went before the game could restart and 1876 ran out winners in what was a hard-fought contest at one of the most scenic grounds in the league.
