Goals galore at sultry Treborth

Those that attended the match saw a thoroughly entertaining Welsh Cup tie, the shoreline may look one-sided but the Tigers played a full part in the match.

During the first five minutes of the match 1876 applied attacking pressure to their neighbours from the other end of the suspension bridge, a notable example of the pressure was the marauding run from Les Davies that almost made it to the penalty area.

The pressure told in the fourth minute when Jamie Petrie’s nice penalty area work allowed Cameron Barry to score from close range, The young midfielder almost doubled the lead when he almost connected with a long pass from midfield.

Within minutes of the goal Menai Bridge had also found their way into the match but in the twelfth minute a smart one-two on the edge of the area allowed Barry to bag his brace. Over the next ten minutes the match opened up further as both sides pushed forward.

By the twentieth minute the Tigers had settled enough to string decent passes together, by the twenty-first minute they had gained a penalty. The penalty was missed but Sion Hogen scored with the rebound. It was now 2-1 to 1876,

Before the Tigers were able to enjoy the closing gap 1876 had restored their two goal advantage; a slight 18 yard box melee allowed Chris Jones to score from close range in the twenty-third minute. 1876’s fans were further buoyed by three corners in ninety seconds, a flying header from Les Davies that was almost balletic and a nice one-touch passing move that resulted in a free kick on the right wing.

Eventually 1876 added a couple of goals to the scoreline. In the thirty-first minute Les Davies turned on the penalty spot and scored with a precise shot. In the thirty-third minute Chris Jones made the score 5-1 when he slid his second goal home.

In the remaining portion of the half Menai Bridge applied some of their own attacking pressure and Dean Redmond scored their second goal with a good finish in the forty-fourth minute.

Half Time Score - Bangor 1876 5 Menai Bridge 2

For 1876 the start of the second half was almost a perfect repeat of the first half because they also scored within the first five minutes of the referee’s whistle. This time Chris Jones completed his hat-trick with a considered finish. The score became 6-2.

For the next twenty minutes the match developed a pleasing pattern for the crowd; if Menai Bridge attacked then 1876 replied in kind. With Wimbledon taking place it was quite apt that the match slightly resembled a tennis match.

In seventy-first minute a nice flowing move lead to Chris Jones being fouled in the area. Jones took the penalty himself and scored his fourth goal of the match. 1876 continued to attack and there were further near misses from a variety of distances. The Tigers also continued to keep possession well and push forward as the match continued with the tennis flavour.

In the eighty-fourth minute a nice attack on the right wing allowed Gethin Thomas to score with a close -range header and the scoreline became 8-2. No further goals were added in the last six minutes of the match. At the end of this very entertaining match Bangor 1876 had progressed to the second qualifying round of the Welsh Cup.
