Four from McGonigle against Rhostyllen

On a wet afternoon at Treborth, Bangor 1876 rounded off 2022 with a victory in an entertaining encounter against Rhostyllen.

Early on it was the visitors who threatened first. They won a free-kick 25 yards out from which Samuel Chesters sent a shot narrowly over.

Minutes later the opening goal arrived but at the opposite end. Liam Morris broke down the left and his precise cross was headed in by Corrig McGonigle from the edge of the six yard area.

In the nineteenth minute, 1876 doubled their advantage when McGonigle added his second. There looked to be no danger when he received the ball with his back to goal just inside the penalty area on the right. However, he turned sharply and curled a shot over Rhostyllen goalkeeper William Roberts.

Shortly after the midway point in the opening period, a third goal arrived. Les Davies initially saw his powerful downward header from a Sion Edwards corner well saved by Roberts but was able to hook the rebound in from the edge of the six yard box.

Sion Edwards came close to adding a fourth ten minutes before the break when he cut in from the right but Roberts saved well from his powerful low shot.

HALF-TIME: BANGOR 1876 3-0 RHOSTYLLEN

Five minutes into the second half, Bangor came close to going further ahead when a neat pass from Les Davies found Gethin Thomas inside the box. However, Roberts got his fingertips to the shot and turned it away for a corner.

Minutes later a fourth goal did arrive and it came from a familiar source. Les Davies played a ball over the top for Corrig McGonigle to chase and the prolific attacker chipped the ball over the Rhostyllen goalkeeper and into the net from the left side of the penalty area.

Just before the hour mark, McGonigle scored his fourth of the afternoon when he sidefooted in a Jamie Petrie cross from close range to make it 5-0 to Bangor.

Rhostyllen got on the scoresheet just after the hour mark. Kian Owen was adjudged to have fouled Jordan Ellis and Taylor Williams stepped up to convert the spot kick.

The visitors came close to getting another goal back when Samuel Chesters headed over after a free-kick was swung in from the left wing.

Inside the last quarter hour, Bangor 1876 were reduced to ten men when Kian Owen received a second yellow card.

With just over five minutes left, McGonigle came close to scoring his fifth and Bangor's sixth when he got on the end of a cross from Jamie Petrie but Roberts saved well.

Moments later a sixth goal arrived and it was McGonigle's turn to be the provider. He headed on a long throw from substitute Shaun Lock which allowed fellow substitute Harry Galeotti to score from close range.

Rhostyllen continued to battle and came close to scoring when Eric Brown fired a first time shot just wide after a cross from the right. However, he made no mistake from a similar position in injury time to reduce the deficit in the final move of the game.

FULL-TIME: BANGOR 1876 6-2 RHOSTYLLEN
