Second half goals earn thrilling victory

In their first away fixture of the new season, Bangor 1876 gained a hard-fought victory away to Llanrwst United.

In sunny conditions at Parc Gwydir, Bangor made a bright start and twice came close within the opening ten minutes. Sion Edwards fired a first time shot narrowly wide from just outside the box before Les Davies hit the post with an effort from a similar position.

Still inside the first quarter hour, Liam Morris also came close to scoring when his twenty yard shot across goal grazed the outside of the post. However, it was the hosts who took the lead somewhat against the run of play.

Just after the midway point in the opening period, former Llannefydd attacker Llion Morris found space on the right wing from which he played the ball into the box towards Samuel Jones. Jones applied a calm finish to open the scoring.

Within minutes, 1876 had a chance to level but Corrig McGonigle shot over the bar after being played in by Sion Edwards. At the other end, Llanrwst midfielder Leon Doran shot over from 20 yards out. With half-time approaching, Les Davies had a chance to equalize but headed over following a corner kick taken by Sion Edwards.

HALF-TIME: Llanrwst United 1-0 Bangor 1876

Bangor 1876 made a determined start to the second half as they sought to impose themselves on the game. Six minutes after the interval, they were level. Liam Morris broke into the left side of the Llanrwst penalty area and his shot was well saved by home goalkeeper Gwydion Owen. However, the ball broke to Corrig McGonigle to side foot in his ninth goal in three games.

The equalizer seemed to spur on 1876 and they sought to further stretch the hosts as they went in search of another goal. Just before the midway point in the second half it arrived. Sion Edwards crossed the ball from the left wing and it was met by a powerful header from Les Davies that put the visitors ahead for the first time.

As the game entered its final 20 minutes, Bangor almost increased their advantage following a corner kick taken on the left by Sion Edwards but Tom Clarke headed over. Llanrwst sought to apply pressure at the other end but the visiting defence remained resolute.

In the final minute of the game, a Les Davies flick on at the left side of the penalty area initially looked like it was heading towards Llanrwst goalkeeper Gwydion Owen. However, the Bangor captain followed the ball in and got there first to head it over Owen and into the net and clinch a victory that delighted the large travelling contingent.
