The blues in red earn a good away cup victory

There was small historical detail attached to today's match, it was the first time that Bangor 1876 had played a competitive match after the first week of March.

1876 began the match in a very positive frame of mind and attacked almost immediately. The approach meant that Corrig McGonigle and Jamie Petrie had shots that were virtually cleared off the line. in the first 10 minutes.

The blues in red continued to apply attacking pressure for the next twenty minutes. One example being the short passage of slick passing that produced a ouple of corners and Sion Edwards delicate pass that found Jamie Petrie. Other notable incidents included Les Davies hitting the bar, McGonigle narrowly missing and Tommy Torr making a couple of noteworthy saves

1876 took the lead when Sion Edwards suffered a foul in the box in the 29th minute, Corrig McGonigle scored firmly with the penalty that resulted. Within a minute of the penalty a goalmouth scramble saw both McGonigle and Petrie have shots blocked.

McGonigle scored his second goal of the match in the 33rd minute. A weak defensive clearance found the feet of Les Davies, who exquisitely floated a pass to McGonigle to enable him to score with an assured finish.

The 35th minute provided more scientific evidence that 2-0 is the least secure lead in football as Luke McGivern controlled a pass from Richard Jones to make the score 2-1.

1876 continued to attack after the setback. Both wings were utilised, Cameron Barry gently probed from midfield and Petrie showed some neat footwork to help create chances.

In the last minute of the first half the blues in red restored their two goal lead. Petrie's shot hit the bar and Les Davies headed the descending ball past Torr's valiant blocking attempt.

The second half was only seconds old when 1876 were awarded their second penalty of the match. McGonigle completed his hatrick with another shot of firm assurance. 1876 now enjoyed a three goal lead.

With 44 minutes left to play the contest was far from over but as Amlwch continued to attack 1876's stoic defensive duo - Tom Clarke and Corey Jones - remained calm at the heart of the visitors’ defence. 1876 also continued to attack and a good example of this came from the good wing play of Heald and Petrie that almost fashioned a free flowing goal.

Alwyn Roberts came on for Harry Galeotti in the 57th minute and whilst he may not have scored today 1876 fans will have been very encouraged by his performance. Roberts either went searching for the ball or was able to bring other players into play with excellent hold-up play.

Whilst both sides continued to attack in the last 30 minutes 1876 had slightly more potency as long-range shots were attempted and closer range shots were blocked

The 1876 pressure continued in the last ten minutes as Sion Edwards almost scored when a jinking run became a rasping shot and Aaron Heald almost succeeded with another effort.
